Overview:
The COVID-19 pandemic is a global crisis that is yet to be controlled. Nations are facing health and economic challenges whose impact will still be felt after the crisis is over. With countries in lockdown to flatten the curve, more need to be done to support the government’s efforts to curtail the effects of the pandemic. Nigeria COVID-19 Innovation Challenge is an initiative of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) aimed at
identifying and showcasing innovative technology that will contain the pandemic, cushion the effects of the pandemic, create awareness on measures to prevent the spread, engage stakeholders in the discussion as well as point Nigerians to educative tools to engage with during the lockdown period. Nigeria COVID-19 Innovation Challenge is open to Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.

Nigeria COVID-19 Innovation Challenge
This will be implemented in partnership with the government and private sector. Participants are allowed to express creativity within their business case and are encouraged to develop unique solutions with an emphasis on using the latest technology.
The challenge will deliver on the following objectives
  • To mitigate the health and social impacts of COVID-19 in Nigeria using innovative technologies.
  • Showcase relevant innovative technologies developed by Nigerians towards COVID-19 and similar future pandemics.
  • Facilitate and enhance processes along the prevention-detection-treatment value chain of COVID-19.
  • Cushion the financial and social impact of COVID-19 during and after the pandemic in Nigeria and possibly beyond.

Requirements for Innovation Challenge
  • Submission of the form before the deadline
  • 2 minutes of video of products/services
  • Each participating team is responsible for whatever hardware and/or software they believe they need to participate (e.g. programming application, laptops, phones, etc), including any necessary chargers.
  • Individuals may register. They will be placed with a team that complements their skills and background. Teams with female members are preferred.
  • Each team will be attached to a mentor to enable them to conclude the 48-hour hack. Three champion teams will be identified at the end.
  • It is expected that teams will build working applications, proofs of concept, or prototypes, as well as presentation materials, to explain, pitch, and present the application.
  • Teams can consist of two to three members, and at least one member must be female.
  • All teams should have any two of the following: a graphics designer, a software developer, and a business developer.
  • All teams should have a team name.
  • The Innovation Challenge organizers have the right at their sole discretion to determine whether an entrant is eligible for the contest.

Overview:
The program aims at fostering strong, internationally oriented higher education systems in Sub-Saharan Africa with the capacity to contribute to sustainable development. To this end, scholarships are granted for development-related.
Master or doctoral studies for individuals who plan to pursue a career in teaching and/or research at a higher education institution in Sub-Saharan Africa.

As part of the In-Region Scholarship Programme DAAD offers scholarships for Ph.D. and Master studies. The program is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and aims at university staff in the first line, without neglecting the public sector demand of academically trained personnel.

It has been agreed upon that DAAD cooperates with the Stellenbosch University by offering up to 5 In-Region Scholarships for Master studies and up to 4 In-Region Scholarships for Ph.D. studies at the Stellenbosch University for the intake 2021. Scholarships will be awarded subject to the provision of funds and to the conclusion of a contract between the host institution and DAAD.

Eligibility:

  • Have successfully completed generally a three-year university degree (Master candidates) or a two-year university degree (doctoral candidates) with above average results (at least: Second Class/Upper division)
  • Clearly show motivation and a strong commitment
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the language of instruction
  • Have generally completed their last university degree not more than 6 years ago at the time of application
  • Must be nationals or permanent resident of a Sub-Saharan African country (excluding South Africa)

Overview:
The International Development Research Center (IDRC) has helped graduate students undertake
thesis research in the field of international development since 1982. IDRC Doctoral Research Awards are intended to build capacity and develop research skills in Canada and the Global South to improve the lives of people in the developing world.

This call is open to Canadians, permanent residents of Canada, and citizens of developing countries pursuing doctoral studies at a Canadian university. Awards under this call will cover the costs of field research conducted for a doctoral dissertation in one or more countries in the Global South.

Award Eligibility:

  • You must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, or a citizen of a developing country, excluding countries in southern and eastern Europe, South Caucasus, and Central Asia (but including Afghanistan). 
  • You must be enrolled at a Canadian university at the doctoral level (you must have completed several courses of the doctoral program, but not necessarily all courses when you submit your application).
  • Your research proposal must be approved by your thesis supervisor. Please provide proof.
  • Your proposed field research must be conducted for a doctoral dissertation and must take place in one or more developing countries (see list of exceptions below).
  • You must provide evidence of affiliation with an institution or organization in the developing region(s) in which the research will take place.
  • You must have completed coursework and passed comprehensive exams before taking up the award.
  • You may not be in receipt of two or more active IDRC awards at the same time; these include the IDRC Research Awards. No time overlaps will be permitted. If you are in receipt of IDRC funds from another source (e.g. a Queen Elizabeth Advanced Scholars award or through a professor’s IDRC research grant) for activities that will be active when and if you take up an IDRC Doctoral Research Award, you will be asked to demonstrate how funds from each are not being used towards the same objective.
  • Your field research must be relevant to one of six development outcome areas to which IDRC aims to contribute through its work. These are:

  4. Climate resilience and sustainable food systems

The following criteria will be used to evaluate applications:

The International Development Department, University of Birmingham, is pleased to offer one scholarship for our MSc in International Development (Governance and State-building), for the academic year starting in September 2020.
The scholarship is provided by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation and is for a two-year program, with the successful candidate undertaking the full MSc program, with a one-year internship being integral to the program. The internship will consist of six months with IDD and six months with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation in London.

Overview: 
SuaCode Africa 2.0 is a smartphone-based online course to teach coding to Africans with little or no programming experience. And for the first time, the program will be in both English and French! You would need an Android smartphone to take part in this course.

In this cohort, 1,000 students will get the opportunity to be introduced to basic coding concepts over a 2-month period and build a mobile app in the process.
Selected learners will receive FULL SCHOLARSHIPS sponsored by Nsesa Foundation to partake in this cohort and hence will not have to pay anything.

SuaCode Africa 2.0 will run for 8 weeks from 1st May 2020 – 1st July 2020. Learners will be expected to commit 3-5 hours a week, submit assignments each week, and complete the course within this period. As a result, do not apply for this cycle if you cannot commit this amount of time.

Learners that complete this 8-week online course will receive a certificate and those that complete assignments with outstanding performance and proactively help other learners on the course forum will have mentoring sessions with professionals from tech companies such as Google and Facebook.

In addition, female applicants accepted into SuaCode Africa 2.0 will be admitted into Nsesa Foundation’s STEM WOW Mentoring program where they will have an exclusive mentoring session with one of our STEM WOWs — an inspirational African woman in STEM.

Overview: 
In recognition of the role of science, technology, and innovation, as essential tools for Africa’s socio-economic transformation, and the needed institutional arrangements for the implementation of Africa Science, Technology, and Innovation Agenda, the Executive Council
of AU Member States adopted the Decision Ex.CL/Dec.747 (XXII) and Decision Ex/CL/Dec.216(VII) on the establishment of the African Scientific, Research, and Innovation Council (ASRIC). The ASRIC was launched officially in November 2018, and the African Union Scientific, Technical and Research Commission (AU-STRC) is the Secretariat of the ASRIC.

On the other hand, the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fes (UEMF), was created in November 2012 and labeled by the Union for the Mediterranean (a union of 43 country members). UEMF is a University of a regional character and is located in the iconic city of Fes, which houses one of the oldest still-functioning universities in the world, “Al Karaouiyine”.

The ASRIC and UEMF offer 10 scholarship slots for the academic year 2020-2021 for African Ph.D. students to carry out their doctoral research work at the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fes (UEMF), Morocco. The duration of the study and that of the scholarship is three years.

Scholarship Funding: 
The grant is mainly directed to the funding of Ph.D. students and will provide support for tuition, research costs and stipend starting from the 2020/2021 academic year.
Funding for the program is for a maximum of four (4) years (First-year applicants) and three (3) years (Second-year applicants).

Eligibility Criteria:

  • First or Second year Ph.D. students in a discipline closely related to the research themes above (e.g. Food Science, Nutrition, Food Process Engineering, and others).

Université Paris-Saclay aims to promote access for international students to its Master’s programs, provided by its faculties,
component-institutions, and associated universities, and to make it easier for highly-qualified international students to join the University, especially for those wishing to develop an academic project through research up to the doctoral level.

Scholarships will be awarded for the 2020-2021 academic year.   • The amount of the Université Paris-Saclay scholarship is 10,000€ per year. It is paid by Université Paris-Saclay for the duration of the academic year, and for a period of 10 consecutive months (September to June).
  • A maximum of 1,000€ for travel and visa expenses can also be awarded depending on the candidate’s country of origin.
  • Laureates will receive their scholarship as well as travel expenses only upon arrival in France and once they have enrolled in the program to which they were admitted.
Application Procedure:
  • Students are required to apply first for a Master’s program at the Université Paris-Saclay.

Eligibility: 
To be eligible to apply, start-ups or SMEs must meet the following criteria:
  • Have active users and revenue in at least one eligible low- or middle-income market
  • Use or be planning to use mobile technology strategically
  • Have the potential and appetite to form strategic partnerships with mobile operators
  • Have a clear and measurable socio-economic impact, in particular: serving low-income citizens, rural populations, women and/or youth 
  • Demonstrate how they will advance the SDGs
  • Be registered and operating in the country of project implementation. The applicant must also be registered
  • in the country where they will receive the grant money (if not the same as the implementation country).
  • Be fully compliant with relevant business licensing, taxation, employee and other relevant regulations in all countries of operation
  • Be compliant with all applicable laws including upholding/adhering to fundamental human rights,
  • UK Modern Slavery Acts, Gender Equality Act, Child Protection Policies and all international labor standards
  • Have 50% matching funding for the total grant amount ‘in cash’ and/or ‘in kind

Within the framework of cooperating in Masters and Ph.D. programs, the aim of the African Excellence Centre at UWC in Cape Town is to prepare the next generation of leaders to meet the typical economic, social and political challenges
arising from the development process. The research-oriented training programs already established at the Ruhr-University of Bochum and the University of the Western Cape have been run in close cooperation for several years now.

In order to adequately prepare the next generation of leaders through research-oriented training, it is not sufficient to have the possibility to award scholarships to promising candidates from all over Sub-Saharan Africa, but it is also necessary to maintain strong research focus on the work of the center and to cooperate closely with other leading universities in the region.

For applicants from Sub-Saharan African countries with an excellent academic record, the DRD offers a limited number of DAAD merit scholarships per year.

Eligibility: 

Scholarship applicants are advised to carefully read about the specific entry requirements and course application procedure of the program of their choice.   • Applicants should have an outstanding academic record – at least 70% for your last degree

Scholarship For A Study Period In Germany 
Apart from full scholarships for participation in one of the above-mentioned programs a number of mobility scholarships for Master students are available each year. During such a study period abroad scholarship holders can participate in a Summer School at Ruhr-University Bochum, complete an internship with a German organization working in the field related to their studies or they can visit Ruhr-University Bochum during the completion phase of their Master Thesis for intensive supervision periods.
It is not necessary to apply for mobility scholarships before starting your studies. The application procedure for mobility scholarships will instead be announced to participants of the cooperating programs.

Designed to prepare young leaders to deepen understanding between China and the rest of the world,  Schwarzman Scholars is the first scholarship created to respond to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st Century. Whether in politics, business or science, the success of future leaders around the world will depend upon an understanding of China’s role in global trends.

With the inaugural class enrolled in 2016, the program gives the world’s best and brightest students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and professional networks through a one-year Master’s Degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing – one of China’s most prestigious universities.

Every year, up to 200 Schwarzman Scholars will represent the world’s next generation of leaders — high-caliber individuals with open minds and limitless potential — a network of leaders who will serve as bridges between China and the rest of the world.

Scholarship Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate degree or first degree from an accredited college or university or its equivalent. Applicants who are currently enrolled in undergraduate degree programs must be on track to successfully complete all degree requirements before August 1 of their Schwarzman Scholars enrollment year. There are no requirements for a specific field of undergraduate study; all fields are welcome, but it is important for applicants, regardless of undergraduate major, to articulate how participating in Schwarzman Scholars will help develop their leadership potential within their field.
  • Age Requirement. Candidates must be at least 18 but not yet 29 years of age as of August 1 of their Schwarzman Scholars enrollment year.
